I know all of us would have visited hill stations at some point of time or the other and would have enjoyed it too. The cool weather, the calm atmosphere and green plants and trees everywhere, going up and up, climbing round and round the roads in hair pin bends. On one end, the view of the valley and on the other end, houses and buildings arranged here and there. Sometimes both sides are covered with tall trees giving a feeling of passing through a green, natural tunnel. I was able to experience all that on my recent trip towards Ooty.
I wanted to talk about one place in particular – Needle Rock view point. When we went there it was not crowded with tourists, we walked a kilometer to reach the view point. The path was winding with steps here and there and all the way, the view was awesome! It was so calm, the breeze was mild and the weather pleasant. As I stood there looking, the houses below looked so tiny and the vehicles moving up and down the roads looked insignificant. I had no thoughts running in my mind of yesterday’s sorrows or tomorrow’s worries but just living in the present, beholding the surrounding scenery that no camera could capture perfectly. (We did try to take some pictures J panorama )
I am wondering maybe the reason why God preferred to meet people in the mountains(Abraham, Moses, Elijah – especially when it involved important lessons) could be because people would be more inclined to listen, as the sounds of the world have been silenced there? They were in the presence of God and they got to listen to the voice of God without distractions.
I have always been intrigued by Elijah’s encounter at Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8-18) The Word of God says “…but the Lord was not in the wind… but the Lord was not in the earthquake… but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire came a gentle whisper.” So when our ears are shut out from other noises, tuned and waiting to hear His voice, we can hear His gentle whisper. May be this is why God says “Be still and know that I am God” because we, as sheep who have strayed away, when we silently wait in His presence, will be able to hear His gentle voice calling out to us and know that it is our Shepherd and run to Him, who is waiting for us with his arms wide open and draws us closer to Him.
