Scars

As I gazed out of the window from my cab, I noticed another cab nearby whose side was damaged, both the doors were having a big scrape mark. The paint had gone, I could see the bare metal. Looked like he had scraped it along some divider or something. Maybe some other vehicle had sideswiped him. I wondered what could have happened. I’m sure he had a story to tell of how he had a brush with death and narrowly escaped. Though his car was damaged, his life was preserved intact.

I looked ahead to see the back of another cab with many dents and minor scratches. I thought to myself: These cabs are on the road every day from morning till night, weaving through the traffic, they are bound to get bumped into and bruised more often than not.(I hope you get the drift by now)

We all have scars we have acquired from traveling life’s journey. We all have stories to tell. Some damages are minor whereas some are major. Some healed, some still in the process of recovery. Some though healed, might leave a scar, faded over time but still visible. Some do a good job of covering it up with a good paint job. But deep inside we all know that we are all damaged to some degree.

We all have stories to tell, not just on what happened to us but also stories of healing. Stories of survival. Of what we endured but still persevered. Maybe that’s why this verse (2 Corinthians 4:8-9) is so relatable:

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed;

perplexed, but not in despair;

persecuted, but not abandoned;

struck down, but not destroyed.

After every battle, after every challenge or trials we face, we have stories to tell of how God came through, how He stepped in and saved the day. How he enabled us with strength from above to go through all that we did and still stand. We stand to this day- only by the grace of God. I don’t know how many such battles are there for me to face yet, before God calls me home. But I do not have to despair or feel discouraged because God gives me all the encouragement I need to keep going. Further in the chapter we get to read:

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

So we walk forward every day in life’s journey acknowledging the scars. Yet choosing to live another day looking forward to healing. If not completely on this side of eternity, then we live with the hope that all that’s broken will one day be made new on the other side of eternity.
