I don’t know how many of you are good at it but I for one know that I am not. Maybe that is why I always think that I will never become a Project Manager! I have seen how they think through various things while coming up with a plan for the project and I am amazed. If I were to put up a plan, I would most probably come up with something like – write code, build and run, test code and done! Though this might be something like a basic outline, it is just not enough to start a project on. I wouldn’t want to bore you with all the details, so I’m stopping it right there.
So, what other options do I have? Well, there is the technical career path and I think I am going along those lines, as I like breaking my head over problems which I feel are complex but usually has a simple solution as eventually pointed out by my technical gurus. I know I would never be good as a team manager (I know it’s a long way to go but just wondering) because that involves vision – which I obviously don’t have. They have to think of what the current trend in technology is, what the business needs are and where we are going and what we will be in another 10 years or so and they plan the work and shape their teams accordingly.
So when I hear people discussing all such stuff, I somehow get lost in the middle because I am not a long-term person. Actually I am not a goal-oriented person at all! So when people ask me where do I see myself in the next 5 years? I am blank. That is why I dread the HR interviews, because I cannot say “I don’t know” as an answer (but I use that for the technical questions though!)
Is it okay, not to have any plans at all or to just go with the flow? I think not, because then life would seem to have no purpose! If you are not a career-oriented person, then that is ok but I think there should be some personal goals at least. And just having a goal is a waste if we don’t take steps to achieve that goal. So that starts with planning! (Now you know what I am leading to)
I know I am not good at planning but I know many people who are good at it and I know who is the best – none other than God, the Creator! Just take the creation process for instance, God made man only after he created light, plants, animals – basically all that he needed was already there when he came to life. Wasn’t God’s plan great? Also when you think of the entry of Jesus into the world: Everything was pre-planned. And God made it known through His word – the place and manner of his birth, the timing, the purpose, what Jesus would do, how he will be rejected by his own, the manner of his death and his resurrection – everything! The Redemption process was His greatest plan. And as we read the Bible, we see that He is very good at executing them too!
And He has great plans for you and me – all ready and written down! And His plans are to prosper us and not to harm us. Even though at times we may not understand or it may not make sense to us but remember – His ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are higher than our thoughts – as the heavens are higher than the earth. Have faith! His promises are always Yes and Amen in Christ!
