Red whiskered bulbuls used to come often to our apartment complex. It has a unique call, “bi-chu bi-chu” (that’s how I understand it as 🙂 ) So if I’m nearer to the balcony, I try to look at where the sound is coming from and see how many there are. They usually come in pairs. Of late, they sometimes peck the wooden/glass part of the doors, as if to get my attention.
One such time, I looked out through the partially opened balcony door and could see one in the balcony railing and the other one was sitting silently on the wire. It had something in it’s mouth that looked like a stick. I thought to myself that it is probably gathering sticks to build a nest. Just then it flew closer and landed on the latch of the balcony door and turned it’s head towards me.
At the close range I could see that it was worms and not stick as I had assumed. Probably to feed the young ones. There were 2 and one was slightly wiggling, It felt as if the bird hopped closer just to show me my misunderstanding. Then it promptly flew away.
This made me think about how easily we misinterpret things or misunderstand or how we are not able to view things clearly just because we are at a distance. A closer look, revealed the truth of the matter.
This made me remember the story of a little boy who told his father that aeroplanes were small (as he had only seen them fly in the sky, he thought they must be the size of birds) and when his dad took him to an airport to look at it closely, he was amazed at how big it truly was.
As this new year begins, may we make a decision to draw one step closer to God, so we will get to know and understand him better. Wishing all of you a very Happy New Year 2024!
Just a closer walk with Thee
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea
Daily walking close to Thee
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be
