Bangalore, probably the only place on earth, where the majority people decide to opt for a company or not based on it’s location, whether it is closer to their home or not. Because “Traffic”. Don’t have to explain further. Once a person candidly told me, though they got a good offer from another company, they decided to decline because that company did not offer cab services!
Been using the cab services offered by my company for some time now. They keep changing the cabs, drivers and cab mates every now and then, so I get to see a variety of people. Also, for a distance covering close to 6kms I have spent minimum 20 minutes to a maximum of 2 hours traveling, so I have had enough time to observe people in the cab, so here goes the categories of people.
Smart phone users: They are not just in cabs but everywhere. Glued to their phone screens, catching up on the forwarded messages, videos, browsing through photos and updates of friends on social media platforms. I do that for the first few minutes.
The real smart phone users: They are the ones who use the phone for the original purpose of why it was created. They talk with people over phone! I have observed mostly women talking on phones, usually with their mothers, for the whole duration of their journey, and sometimes even continue it after getting down, en route to their house.
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven — … A time to be silent and a time to speak. – Ecclesiastes 3:1,7.
Silent Spectators: They prefer being silent to making small talk, they look out the window and observe the real world. Maybe they are shy or maybe it’s just that they need rest from all the talking they would have done in office and would have to do at home.
Social butterflies: They are the opposite of the previous category. They love to talk. They share interesting stories or talk about the latest news. It is always fun to hear them talk, they offer variety and entertainment during the journey.
Like apples of gold in settings of silver
Is a word spoken in right circumstances. – Proverbs 25:11 (NASB)
Song lovers: These are the ones with their headphones on. Listening to songs, music or audio books maybe? I am one in this category. (Not audio books, just songs) I’ve observed people nodding their heads according to the tune or murmuring/humming songs loudly, quite unaware of the sound they make because they can’t hear themselves over their headphones! I even saw a guy doing the beats with his hands and fingers – he must have been a drummer I guess.
Sleepers: These are the blessed lot. Within few minutes of boarding the cab, they go to sleep. No matter how bad the traffic is or how bad the roads are, they doze off, oblivious to the outside world. They roughly wake up few minutes from their drop point. I wonder how they do that! It is a good thing, to be able to take a short rest, away from the screens and visual stimuli. I’ve tried but never works for me.
In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves. – Psalms 127:2
Is this all or are there more such categories of people? Maybe there are, but that is all I have for now.
