In the Bible, God is called by different names by different people based on their experiences. For instance: Hagar gave God the name El Roi “You are the God who sees me” Abraham called God as Jehovah Jireh “The Lord will provide” Guess who said “The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.”? – Moses, Miriam and the Israelites after they crossed the Red sea and saw the Egyptians being defeated (Exodus 15:3) The Israelites were slaves in Egypt for 400 years, no military prowess; in fact the Egyptians wanted all the boy babies to be killed so the Israelites won’t rebel or fight back. Even after seeing the display of God’s power in form of plagues, the Egyptians wouldn’t let go. They chased them till the Red Sea. The Israelites were terrified and cried out to the Lord.
Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long. – Exo 14:19,20.
During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. He jammed the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.” – Exo 14:24,25
Technically, even before the Israelites could sing the victory song: of their God being their warrior, the Egyptians declared that the Lord is fighting for the Israelites, against them! What an awesome God! We can learn a lot from the battles in the Bible, it is applicable to us too as life is a battlefield! Every one of us goes through battles in life. Our Pastor often notes: At any given point in time, we might be in the midst of a battle or just out of the battle or about to enter into one!
Each battle plan of God is unique. In Bible we see, in some cases, enemies fled because they heard noise of chariots (sent by God), some enemies fought and killed each other (because of a spirit of confusion), once the enemies saw sunlight reflected on water and thought it was blood and thought the war was over! Once an Angel of the Lord put to death 185000 enemies. So many different ways in which God delivered his people, He does the same even now. The way in which he delivers us from one situation may be different from how he delivers in others, but he delivers! So no matter in which stage of battle you are in – take heart! Be bold! We have the Warrior God by our side who fights our battles for us!
