Similar yet different

Life teaches us different lessons from different experiences. Especially we learn a lot during trials. Recently me and my husband had to go through similar transitions in life but it happened differently for both of us. The lesson I had to learn was “Trust” and the lesson he had to learn was “Ask”. I was struck by the differences in both our experiences. Then I realised how God deals with each person differently. Recently I was reading the book of Isaiah and came across these verses:

Caraway is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin; caraway is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a stick.

Grain must be ground to make bread; so one does not go on threshing it forever. The wheels of a threshing cart may be rolled over it, but one does not use horses to grind grain.

All this also comes from the Lord Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent. – Isaiah 28:27-29

This reminded me of some other quote which talks about how some plants grow well in the sunshine and how some plants grow well in the shade. So just how the Gardener knows which plants to plant where, God in His wisdom knows which person to place where. It may look as if some people get it easy in life and some get it tough but to each one his own lesson. Also to each one, his own timing, I might add.

This I find reiterated in the call of God to various people, their experiences were similar yet different: (few examples from the Old Testament)

Moses: said he was not eloquent and slow in speech; God supplied Aaron, Moses’ brother as his mouthpiece and said “I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do.” [Exodus 4: 10-16]

Isaiah: exclaimed that he was a man of unclean lips; God sent an Angel who touched his mouth with a live coal from the altar and said your guilt is taken away. [Isaiah 6:5-7]

Jeremiah: said he doesn’t know how to speak and that he is too young; God reached out his hand, touched his mouth and said, “I have put my words in your mouth” [Jeremiah 1:6-10]

So whatever situation we might find ourselves in, let us be open to learning whatever lesson comes our way. May we not compare ourselves with others as each of us are different. May God grant us the grace to trust in his guidance, the path he chooses for us, the place where he wants to plant us and may He give us the strength to bloom where we are planted.
