Well there are lots of things that we don’t understand. So we wonder, we ponder and sometimes ask questions. Our questions change from time to time, depending upon our experiences or our current situations. And this has been the case for lots of people since ages past. I recently came across a psalm by Asaph, that I was able to relate to (Psalm 73). He starts with envying the prosperity of the wicked (verse 3 on wards) something on the lines of bad people, doing bad things but getting away with it and they seem to be living happily, while good people are being good but facing great difficulties – is it really worth it? (Verse 13 – Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.) He sounds frustrated in trying to understand it all.

So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is!
Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.– Psalm 73:16-17 (NLT).

Then he got a breakthrough – he was able to understand their final destiny. Till he tried on his own to understand, it troubled him deeply (NIV). Then he decided to go to the presence of God and then he understood that the difference lies in the final destiny. He goes on to describe on what would be the future of the wicked and what destiny God has kept in store for him.

You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. – Psalm 73:24 (NLT)

God helped him alter his perspective, to look at the bigger picture, to open his heart, to understand, to know what God has in store for us. There are many others who had questions of God – Job, Habakkuk. It is wonderful to read their conversations and how God gently helps them understand. Especially, Job in the end confesses, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for one to know” – Job 42:3. For some questions we may get answers in this side of eternity, when we draw near to God and ask of him, and for others we may have to wait till we go on to the other side of eternity.

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. – 1 Corinthians 13:12
