A wedding

We all know that Jesus’ first miracle was at a wedding in Cana. I have heard people drawing a parallel with the first institution of marriage that God initiated in the Garden of Eden and saying how God views family as an important part of life on Earth. So it is worth taking a closer look.

I recently read that in those days, Jewish people celebrated a wedding with a feast lasting up to 7 days. No wonder there was a shortage of wine! It was considered a disgrace if the hosts did not provide the guests with wine. But eventually they were facing a difficult situation as their supplies of wine were running low. We will note the conversation that happened there. Mary, the mother of Jesus informs him of the need of the hosts.

           1.  Involve Jesus
The first question Jesus asked was “Why do you involve me?” We can guess the answer, because Mary knew that Jesus was the right person to turn to, in times of their need. This is true even now. Whenever we are lacking something or in need, we involve Jesus, we tell him of our situations, our concerns, our helplessness, and our weaknesses because He is the right person to turn to.

          2.  Wait for his time
Then Jesus says, “My time has not yet come”. Sometimes even though we are in need and we have made it known to Jesus, the reply doesn’t seem to be coming! God asks us to wait – for His timing. We may not understand why – we don’t have to! All we have to do is trust in his timings and let him work in his own way.

          3. Do what he says
Mary then advises the servants to obey whatever Jesus might say to them. Obedience and faith goes hand in hand, because we read that Jesus instructed the servants to fill the jars with WATER. It may not make sense to us. But I wonder what the reaction of that one particular servant would have been, when he was asked to take the same to the master of the banquet for tasting! I am not sure exactly when the water in the jar turned to wine but the servant took a step of faith and of obedience and he did so! And voila! The water had turned to wine when the master of the banquet tasted it and he proclaimed that it was the best!

We see that till then the wine was ordinary. Jesus used water which was available at their house and asked them to pour it into the ordinary water jars and transformed it into something extra-ordinary! The best of all wines! We might be having some need, we might be just ordinary people having our own weaknesses, but when we involve Jesus, wait for His timing and do all that He says, He is able to transform us into something better so that his name is glorified thereby enabling people around us to believe!
